Lifestyle Blogger; Berlin
After falling in love with Berlin, Toronto-born Kayla Seah packed her bags and moved her incredibly stylish life to one of the most artistic cities in Europe. And we’re talking, just moved. You see, Seah is still unpacking boxes at this very moment, but hasn’t missed an opportunity to document her love affair with the city on her widely popular blog, Not Your Standard (where you can find snaps of her new apartment). With a background in Fashion Communications, her blogging days started at StyleLikeU in New York before moving back home to work with independent brands like Blush Boutique. Launching Not Your Standard this past October, the site quickly gained a loyal following, which culminated in Seah being invited to the Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference in New York in February. “The most rewarding part about blogging is the reaction you receive from your readers… I honestly thought I was writing for just my mom and sister at first, so it’s been incredibly encouraging to have such an engaged following.”
As a teenager I wanted to be:
The biography of your life would be called:
The List-Making Virgo.
The three words that best describe your style:
Chic and classy with a little edge.
Christine Centenera, she proves that too much black can never be enough. She is my definition of effortless style.
I mostly enjoy looking at other personal style bloggers. They have always been a constant source of inspiration for me. My top blogger crush right now is Danielle from We Wore What.
Fashion victim moment:
I was forced to buy Crocs at Tomorrowland music festival in Belgium. I refused to ruin any of the shoes I had brought with me from Paris. The grounds were a complete disaster and they were the only “shoes” you could purchase within reasonable proximity.
The look, outfit or item you most love:
An old leather jacket of mine that has basically molded to my body. It’s that one jacket that pairs equally well with a dress as it does jeans.
Currently on your reading list:
The Sprouted Kitchen cookbook. Whole, clean cooking at its best.
The last concert you saw:
Paul Kalkbrenner in Berlin. Minimal melodies at their finest.
Your daily eats:
Café Liebling in our new neighbourhood, Prenzlauer berg. The perfect brunch/lunch stop!
Currently addicted to:
My Canon t4i.
Greatest virtue a person can possess:
Being hospitable. I’ve always enjoyed making others happy… I like to make sure that everyone around me is content.
The best advice you’ve ever received:
Do anything and everything, and if you regret it in the morning, sleep in.
Michele Colins, owner of Blush Boutique, my previous boss and great friend. She has impeccable style that you can only be born with. Her talent in visual presentation is flawless… she could make a brown paper bag look beautiful. She’s a strong businesswoman and incredibly valuable mentor.
If you had one more hour in the day, you’d spend it:
Living LUXE means:
I think it means not living a standard life… being original and being open to new places. I try to live by this quote by Orson Welles: “Create your own visual style. Let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others.”
